When I started this blog, I thought fashion was hard to do. Now I know it just about having fun. The same thing goes for blogging. There is no formula or ideal concept. Just an honest voice that's looking for a way to make (even the tiniest) difference in this world full of screaming voices..
But more and more little voices start to sound louder than the masses. They say it is ok not to be cool. That it is ok not to be expensive. To dye your hair blue if you want to. To be original, not like the others. That quality counts, and not quantity.
As Ivan Rodic (facehunter) says in the introduction of his first book;
"It's superficial to think that young people around the world are all starting to look the same. I believe that we live in a historic time of personal inventiveness, and that human beings have never before been so intensely individual and so interested in dressing individually...Nietzsche's exhortation, 'Become what you are,' is now a reality."

That's the way I want to go with this blog. I will use it as a platform to form a critical opinion and to showcase the talented youngsters we have in this world.
very interesting post. I agree, and really like the quotation you wrote!
ReplyDeleteI think it's just so important to dress the way you want to. Fashion is about expression, about personality. I dress the way I feel. Some people can be so ridiculous about fashion. They say it's superficial, they say it's transitory. I say it's bullocks! Fashion doesn't have to be volatile. You can go out wearing your grandma's skirt with your fanciest heels and with the most chunky accessories. I mean the way I feel effects the way I look but it can be the other way around as well. In dutch: niets moet, alles mag. http://fashionmaniaatlarge.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI died my hair black with a blue shine in the olden days :-P
ReplyDeleteI agree with the sentiment behind this but I think Yvan's comment is a little bit naive. The similarities I see between the way people dress on the street and the influence of streetstyle blogs like his own (or particularly The Sartorialist), filtered through channels like Mr Porter, and right down into high street stores is quite astonishing. In many parts of London people are practically identical, while thinking they look "individual"...
ReplyDeleteYou right in some ways, but I think you shouldn't put Facehunter and The Sartorialist on the same line. The Sartorialist shoots people that are in the business, and have access to the Bond Street Brands. Facehunter photographs people that put together original looks with own-made, thrifted and vintage pieces etc.
ReplyDeletePeople who ridicule fashion, do not fully understand it. They feel like they're not part of the cool group, when in fact, the 'cool group' doesn't really exist. It's just people who have fun with their clothes.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful comment!
I would agree with you if this were three years ago. But having watched Yvan work in London and Paris every season and seen who he photographs at parties etc, these are not "real people" who make all their own clothes anymore. Many of them are professional models or people working in the industry (just not the major editors that Scott goes for). And I recognise so many of my friends on the Facehunter! I feel he has become absorbed into the industry - he goes to all the big parties, sits front row at fashion shows, hangs out with designers, editors, models - and consequently the content of his blog has changed. I'm not saying this is necessarily a bad thing - it's just not how he sells himself to his audience really.
ReplyDeleteThese words are so true & inspiring. I've never really read Rodics book entirely but after hearing his Nietszche theory I want to have it badly! I totally agree with you, people shouldn't worry too much about trends, being cool, being original. In the end it might sound superficial but why do it if it isn't fun? I want to do exact the same thing with my blog, though I find it kind of hard to be critical/witty/quirky all the time while having a life beside of the blog, but I think YOU do it great :). I wish we could meet up sometimes in the summer and talk all day about individualism, haha!
